“I’ve missed you, Dex.”
CHAPTER THREE
The Taj Mahal
Sunday 15 July 1990
This chapter basically contains a drunk letter Dexter wrote, but that never reached Emma, and a typical day at Emma’s work. Here is the first part of it that caught my eye.
“Since I’ve started this letter I’ve drunk (drunken?dronk?) two more beers and so I’m ready to say this now. Here goes. Em, we’ve known each other for five or six years now, but two years properly, as, you know, ‘friends’, which isn’t that long but i think I know a bit about you and I think I know what your problem is. […]
I think you’re scared of being happy, Emma.I think you think that the natural way of things is for your life to be grim and grey and dour.[…] In fact I’ll go further say that i think you actually get a kick out of being disappointed and under-achieving, because it is easier, isn’t it? Failure and unhappiness is easier because you can make a joke out of it.[…]
Well, I think you deserve more. You are smart and funny and kind (too kind if you ask me) and by far the cleverest person I know. And (am drinking more beer here - deep breath) you are also a Very Attractive Woman. And (more beer) yes I do mean ‘sexy’ as well, though i feel a bit sick writing it down. Wll I’m not going to scribble it out because it’s politically incorrect to call someone ‘sexy’ because it’s also TRUE. You’re gorgeous, you old hag, and if I could give you just one gift ever for the rest of your life it would be this. Confidence. It would be the gift of confidence.”
I think this is a really, really sweet paragraph and it not only describes the way Dexter sees Emma and her weaknesses, but it can also be projected on Blair. She always had a low self-confidence, she always thought serena would outshine her, steal her spotlight, she always felt like second choice, with nate, her mom, her friends. She struggles (or had to struggle) with Bulimia, which is also a sign of low self-esteem. She is insecure and Dan seems to be one of the very few people who sees that and who worries. This letter could totally be Dan drunk calling Blair and leaving a long, confusing voice message.
I also spotted a lovely word that made me smile like an idiot.
“This letter builds up to an life-changing climax. I wonder if you’re ready for it yet.”
life-changing climax, ready for it yet. Aww … sounds so like Dair if you ask me. Blair herself said their kiss was life-changing. And no, the whole kiss and the aftermath were NOT, i repeat it NOT(!!) about Chuck Bass. If she really realized it was Chuck all the time, why didn’t she call him in the first place? Why did she stay in bed? Why did she avoid him? And why did she chose to not be with him in the end? Why did she kind of chose Dan instead? To her it was unforgivable that Chuck tried to humiliate Dan, not even her so-called ‘new found love’ in Bass didn’t help that fact. The kiss is not about Chuck & Blair, it never was. B, you might be able to fool the Chairios, but you surely can’t fool me. (sorry for that little off-topicly thing, i needed to get this off my mind)
well, there is another litle paragraph about Dexter that i could imagine would suit Dan and his reaction if he had wrote Blair that kind of letter or called her or maybe even what he would think about ‘inside’.
And then he saw the letter. Six blue sheets densely written on both sides. He stared at it as if an intruder had left it behind, and with his new sobriety came the first twinge of doubt. […] All those capitals and exclamation marks and awful jokes. He had called her ‘sexy’, he had used the word ‘discersion’ which wasn’t even a proper word. He sounded like some poetry-reading sixth-former, not a pioneer […] I will find you, I’ve been thinking about you, Dex and Em, Em and Dex - what was he thinking?
that’s it for this chapter. you still interested in it? Well, I defo am!
